Our ProgramsEnvironmental STEM CoursesInfrastructure Academy courses are designed to expose young people to the intersection of the industries that impact the environment and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). Course topics are organized into modules of six weeks in duration. Modules can be integrated into existing high school science classes. These modules can be used to enhance high school science courses by bringing applied, real-world content to the classroom. Modules will be available online via an online learning management system (the Moodle 2.0 platform) for free. In 2010-2011, the following courses will be available: Environmental Technology This year-long course introduces principles and applications of environmental science by focusing on the water and energy infrastructure industries. The course provides an overview of of the supply, production, use and conservation of water and energy. Students will also learn about the scientific evidence behind global warming and predictions for climate change. The Impact of Energy on the Environment This course provides students a scientific foundation for understanding energy issues facing the world today. It introduces energy concepts and explores the environmental impact of energy generation, distribution, and consumption. The differing impacts that coal, oil and natural gas have in generating greenhouse gases are examined and renewable sources of energy and energy efficiency technologies will be introduced. Transportation Engineering and Technology This one-semester course provides students an introduction to the field of transportation engineering. The course examines social and environmental impacts of planning transportation systems. Students will gain experience using AutoCAD and GIS programs for transportation applications. Basic principles of fuels and their impacts on the environment will also be examined. View Course Outlines Read this for more information on how to get started at your school. |
